in 1955, cyprus decimalized 1000 mils (μιλς, mil) pound. system based on proposal, presented british parliament in 1881, introduce decimal currency system united kingdom. political debate on decimalising british coinage had been going on since 1824, 1881 motion failed gain parliamentary approval , mil-system never introduced united kingdom itself. instead used in various british colonial , protectorate territories, including palestine 1927, , cyprus 1955.

in 1955, coins of king george vi issues withdrawn circulation. these replaced coins queen elizabeth ii, denominated in mils. coins issued following:


3 mils, 5 mils (also issued in 1956), 25 mils, 50 mils, , 100 mils (also issued in 1957).


the 50 mil coin became known shilling , because same size 1 shilling , 9 piastre coins. 100 mil coin became known 2 shillings , because same size 2 shilling , 18 piastre coins. 5 mil coin , 100 mil coin of 1956 sought after collectors of commonwealth coins. 100 mils rare.


coins of republic of cyprus (1963–82)

in 1960, when cyprus became independent under terms of 1959 independence agreement, queen elizabeth ii coinage allowed stay in circulation.


in 1963, republic of cyprus began issue first coins. these struck @ royal mint in london. coins in 1963 issue consisted of following: 1 mil, 5 mils, 25 mils, 50 mils, , 100 mils.


from 1970, issue of 500 mil coins began issued. 1970 500 mil coin issued commemorate f.a.o. , 25th anniversary of united nations. other 500 mil coins issued.

in 1977, gold 50 pounds struck commemorative @ royal mint, llantrisant. coin commemorates archbishop makarios iii, remained in office president of cyprus until death.


in 1981 , 1982, 5 mil coins struck name cyprus trilingually inscribed— kypros in greek, cyprus in english , kıbrıs in turkish.

there 2 issues of these pieces. first issue struck in 1966 , second issue struck in 1974. obverse of these medal-coins depict portrait of president-archbishop makarios iii.
