upon graduation paton joined sir alexander gibb & partners, had been founded in 1922. 1 of first jobs there assist design of new jetty barking power station. in 1927 worked on dam @ maentwrog in north wales , between 1932 , 1933 resident engineer on glenlee portion of galloway hydro-electric power scheme. paton seconded rangoon port trust in 1930 construct wharf export of lead burma. wharf survived serious earthquake on 5 may 1930 , opened on 20 february 1931. on 10 april 1931 paton sailed canada undertake survey of ports , outline additional facilities required in next 25–50 years. assisted in 6 weeks ralph freeman had designed sydney harbour bridge. report issued on 15 january 1932 not implemented until 1935 election of william lyon mackenzie king prime minister of canada. report s findings continued in use until 1970s. paton responsible construction of new brewery guinness in park royal, london october 1933 october 1936. biggest job of career far , involved construction of 7 steel framed buildings, power station, storage silo, roads , railway sidings. paton built industrial , trading estates in wales, west cumberland , london. made partner in firm in 1938.

during second world war running of gibb , partners fell largely paton , james guthrie brown. gibb , partners gained large number of government contracts , within few weeks of start of war in september 1939 workforce increased 2000. paton designed , sited several royal ordnance factories; , in march 1940 travelled turkey construct iron , steel works there. whilst in turkey contracted build emplacements contain guns mothballed battleships in dardanelles. construction of emplacements completed guns later prevented reaching site axis occupation of greece. paton made way britain via greece, italy , france , arrived home 2 days prior italian declaration of war against allies on 10 june 1940. constructed plant @ barry in south wales extraction of magnesium hydroxide sea, turbine factory british thomson-houston company , £7 million underground aircraft engine factory. 1943-44 paton supervised construction, in london docks, of precast concrete caissons required construction of mulberry harbours following normandy landings. 1944-45 in charge of rebuilding of houses damaged v-2 rockets in london districts of wanstead , woodford.


post-war

in 1945 paton began construction of wool factory @ darlington , rayon factory @ carrickfergus, both jobs completed in 1951. in 1946 paton put in charge of economic survey of syria required him traverse country aircraft , car. report, issued in 1947, recommended port, water infrastructure , irrigation improvements , construction of hydroelectric power station on euphrates river. paton undertook similar survey in lebanon 1947 1948. involved in report on possibility of running railroad northern rhodesia dar es salaam, mtwara , nyasaland.

paton worked extensively in field of hydroelectric power , became regarded world authority on matter. 1946 1955 worked on owen falls hydroelectric scheme in uganda resulted in complete stoppage of white nile first time in history. following completion of owen falls dam, paton worked on first stage of kariba dam on zambezi river, of said highlight of professional career . paton made 22 visits site, of total duration of 267 days. project was, @ 420 ft high, largest dam built until and, despite of worst floods on record hitting project, completed in 1960 @ £5 million under budget. in recognition of work on kariba project paton made companion of order of st michael , st george on 1 january 1960. result of success of kariba project gibb , partners became involved many of biggest dam projects of next 2 decades including works in sudan, argentina, south africa , pakistan.

paton later involved in second stage of kariba project , in aswan high dam project. in 1955 became senior partner in sir alexander gibb & partners upon death of alistair gibb in polo accident. 1960 until 1977, when retired, paton responsible partner firm s involvement in supervision of $1.2 billion world bank indus basin project. included construction of mangla dam between 1962 , 1968.


in 1962 gibb & partners 1 of 2 firms chosen (with coyne et bellier) south african government build 2 dams on orange river. first constructed hendrik verwoerd dam officially opened in march 1972. second, p.k. le roux dam, finished in 1977. following success of project paton retained build third, smaller dam, spioenkop dam, finished in 1972. paton involved tunnelling , underground powerhouse drakensberg pumped storage scheme. paton retained world bank once more in 1967 supervise construction of tarbela dam in pakistan, completed in 1976. worked on modernisation of royal mint involved move 600-year home @ tower hill llantrisant in wales in time decimalisation in 1971.
