from june august 2010, international team led scientists united states , indonesia collaborated explore depths of indonesian waters. expedition, indonesia-usa deep-sea exploration of sangihe talaud region (index 2010), featured number of firsts including: maiden voyage of okeanos explorer; first joint indonesia-usa ocean exploration expedition; , first joint international mission 2 ships sending live video scientists in exploration command centers ashore.

from june july 2011, team of scientists , technicians both at-sea , on shore conducted exploratory investigations on diversity , distribution of deep-sea habitats , marine life in vicinity of galápagos islands. 50-day expedition divided 2 ‘legs’ , includes work in ecuador, costa rica, , international waters. mapping , water column information collected during leg identified number of exciting targets explore institute exploration’s little hercules rov during leg ii. between july 11 , july 28, ship explored seamounts, oldest known vent fields, off-axis sulfide mounds, deep fracture zones, , newly discovered vents. expedition marks debut of new camera sled , lighting platform named seirios. when deployed ship little hercules, provided scientists , audiences onshore first video footage number of deepwater areas around galápagos.


mid-cayman rise expedition 2011

in august 2011, noaa ship okeanos explorer embarked on expedition deepest part of caribbean sea, team of international scientists both at-sea , on shore conduct interdisciplinary investigations of mid-cayman rise – ultra-slow spreading center 2 plates gradually move apart , upwelling magma creates new crust , adjacent cayman trough. our exploration focus on oceanic core complexes appear dominate construction of rift valley walls along of mid-cayman rise, , inner wall of cayman trough fracture zone north – investigating geology, marine life, , hydrothermal systems these areas might host. on course of 10 days, ship mapped rift valley walls of mid-cayman rise , northern wall of cayman trough fracture zone using ship’s deep-water multibeam sonar; explored water column hydrothermal activity using ctd rosette, in situ sensors, , shipboard dissolved methane analysis; , conducted detailed seafloor investigations ship’s rov. during expedition, live video of ongoing operations streamed shore team of scientists u.s. , u.k. joined expedition remotely through use of telepresence technology.


veatch canyon shakedown cruise 2012

ex1201 first expedition of 2012 field season noaa ship okeanos explorer. primary objective of shakedown cruise operationally test vessel, systems, , mission equipment. secondary objective of expedition use ship’s technologically advanced multibeam sonar map 3 northeast , mid-atlantic canyon areas in support of benthic habitat identification , management efforts of noaa s northeast fisheries science center (nefsc).after departing homeport of davisville, rhode island, on february 14, okeanos explorer proceeded offshore veatch canyon sonar patch test conducted ensure proper calibration of vessel’s multibeam echosounder. part of successful patch test operations, approximately 280 square kilometers of veatch canyon bathymetrically mapped, including majority of first priority area identified nefsc. later in cruise, focused survey operations conducted @ block, ryan, , mcmaster canyons mapped approximately 900 square kilometers of seafloor, including 65 percent of second nefsc priority area.focused mapping operations @ hendrickson, toms, , berkeley canyons covered approximately 1,400 square kilometers of seafloor. finally, focused mapping operations @ hendrickson, toms, , berkeley canyons covered approximately 1400 square kilometers of seafloor, including 85 percent of third nefsc priority area.while transiting along continental shelf break between focused mapping areas, multibeam, single beam, , sub-bottom sonar data collected, adding seafloor mapping coverage established on okeanos explorer cruise ex1106. in addition successful shakedown testing , mapping operations, ex1201 yielded number of positive educational outcomes. during cruise, 2 graduate interns trained in seafloor mapping operations part of okeanos explorer internship program. additionally, approximately 50 high school students, educators, , local media toured vessel , learned mission @ conclusion of expedition, in charleston, south carolina.
