the 2009 lake eyre flood peaked @ 1.5 m (5 ft) deep in late may, quarter of maximum recorded depth of 6 m (20 ft). 9 km (2 cu mi) of water crossed queensland–south australian border of coming massive floods in georgina river. however, owing low rainfall in lower reaches of these rivers (contrasting heavy rainfall in upper catchments) greater proportion soaked desert or evaporated en route lake, leaving less 4 km (0.96 cu mi) in lake covered area of 800 km (309 sq mi) or 12% of total. flood did not start filling lake s deepest point (belt bay) until late march, little bird life appeared preferring instead nest in upper reaches of lake eyre basin, north of birdsville, large lakes appeared in january result of monsoonal rain.


the high rainfall in summer 2010 sent flood water diamantina, georgina , cooper creek catchments of lake eyre basin, cooper creek reaching lake first time since 1990. higher rainfall has prompted many different birds migrate area breeding.
