the school s official colors of scarlet , gray can traced late-1950s when unlv adopted mascot wolf wearing confederate uniform. scarlet , gray traditional colors of confederacy gray uniforms , red-based flag. unlv s mascot hey reb, toned down version of original mascot named beauregard, wolf character dressed in confederate hat , uniform. unlv s hey reb mascot made debut in 1983. received first makeover in 1997 , second in 2009. named 1 of 12 all-american mascots, competed title of 2004 capital 1 mascot of year , made strong showing coming in second in online voting. no stranger national television, hey reb has appeared in 2 memorable espn sportscenter commercials.


unlv has many traditions in athletic programs. each year men s football team plays nevada wolf pack in football game called battle nevada. trophy game fremont cannon. built kennecott copper corp., nevada mines division, cannon valued @ more $10,000 , considered 1 of best, , loudest, symbols of rivalry in college football. unlv trails nevada in series 17-24 after winning 2015 contest in reno 23-17.


unlv known men s basketball program. made famous coach jerry tarkanian in 1970s–1990s, runnin rebels third winning team in division basketball history percentage, behind kentucky , north carolina.(.713, 1037-418 through 2008) unlv known 1990 ncaa men s division basketball championship defeating duke university 103-73, , still largest margin of victory in championship game. in same game, unlv became first team ever break 100 points in championship game.


unlv known golf program. led coach dwaine knight, unlv golf program has turned out pga tour pros such adam scott, chris riley, chad campbell, ryan moore, skip kendall, charlie hoffman, bill lunde, , andres gonzales. won ncaa national golf team championship in 1998.


in february 2011, rebel men s swimming , diving team won seventh straight mountain west conference titles. 3 rebel swimmers competed in 2008 beijing olympics; joe bartoch , richard hortness represented canada , jonas anderson represented sweden.
