1940
on 15 june german 1st army broke through line @ saar , pushed west , east along line, enveloping french armies, meeting forces of german 16th army had gone around line in west in may. on 15 june michelsberg fired 753 75mm rounds against germans. troops of german 95th infantry division moved behind michelsberg on 21 june, taking fire blocks 3 , 6. ouvrage repulsed full german attack on 22 june 1940, mont des welches , hackenberg. german artillery hit block 3 s cloches , façade of block 2. block 6 destroyed german battery artillery fire. following second armistice @ compiègne on 25 june, boulay sector s garrisons surrendered on 4 july 1940. in following years under german occupation, michelsberg used bombproof factory.

during lorraine campaign hackenberg occupied germans; michelsberg played no role in campaign. german forces did attempt blow position when evacuated, detonating explosives in main gallery.
cold war
following world war ii, interest revived in use of maginot line defend against possible soviet advance through southern germany. funds allocated restoration of gros ouvrages work limited restoration of systems , improvements existing armament. renovations did not include command post or barracks. 1956, michelsberg had been designated part of mòle de boulay, strongpoint in northeastern defenses against soviet attack. late 1950s interest in fixed fortifications waning after france developed nuclear deterrent. money needed maintain , upgrade fortifications diverted nuclear programs. michelsberg maintained use army until 1971 when placed in second-class reserve.
after being abandoned, ouvrage used between 1978 , 1988 cultivation of mushrooms. ouvrage damaged , vandalized during time. renovations , repairs started in 1992 , ongoing. since 1993 has been protected charitable organization allows visits on sundays between april , september, inclusive. volunteers restoring nearby abri de bilmette.
