the day following official launch of monaro on gold coast, prominent melbourne based holden dealer , former racer bill patterson reportedly asked mckay (who on gold coast covering cars launch) cost run 3 of new holden monaro gts327s in 1968 hardie-ferodo 500 @ mount panorama group e series production touring cars. led agreement being reached mckay s scuderia veloce team, under name holden dealer racing team, run 3 monaros separately financed 3 different holden dealers, patterson motors (victoria), midway motors (queensland) , sutton motors (nsw), each dealer named on 3 cars. monaros (not, rumor had it, london-sydney cars) delivered teams base in wahroonga on sydney s upper north shore prepared scuderia veloce chief mechanic bob atkins.


car #23d driven international sports car , formula 1 racer paul hawkins , bill brown, #24d driven new zealander jim palmer (a tasman series regular) , phil west, while car #25d driven 1964 armstrong 500 winner george reynolds , veteran touring , sports car driver brian muir.


the race won privately entered monaro of bruce mcphee , barry mulholland. palmer/west monaro finished second outright, muir/reynolds car in fifth, while hawkins/brown car disqualified receiving outside assistance after breaking wheel in cutting. palmer , west had finished 3rd on road, 2nd placed des west / ron marks monaro disqualified in post-race scrutineering, lifting hdrt car second place.


it not until 1969 datsun 3 hour @ sandown permanent holden dealer team, managed harry firth, had first outing. none of 6 holden dealer racing team drivers 1968, nor david mckay or scuderia veloce involved in firth s 1969 holden dealer team campaign.
