Service history HMS Royal Alfred (1864)



hms royal alfred, halifax harbour, ns , ca1870


she commissioned in january 1867 flagship on north america station; arrived @ halifax, nova scotia, after steaming through major north atlantic gale, 1 day s coal supply in bunkers. remained on station 6 years, moving between nova scotia , west indies, broken short relief hms defence docking. returned pay off in january 1874, , in portland reserve until following year. engineering survey discovered boilers corroded achieve steam pressure of 10 pound/sq. inch , speed of 7.5 knots (13.9 km/h). forthwith laid until sold in 1885 henry castle & sons.
