new type shikumen typically built 1919 1930s. called reformed style shikumen residences. main structural difference between new type , old type shikumen new style buildings 3 storeys high. built of reinforced concrete, rather brick veneer. equipped modern sanitary equipment, , natural lighting became key concern. developments typically laid out main, trunk lane, houses arranged along branch lanes leading trunk lane. advent of motor cars, trunk lanes built wide enough accommodate cars. instead of 1 lane 1 or 2 rows of houses, new style shikumen typically developed in large blocks. standard triangular gables , party walls replaced more elaborate matou or guanyin dou styles, concrete tops. exposed brick used external walls. main gate frame switched stone brick , painted stone cladding. architectural style became far more westernised overall.
each dwelling 1 2 bays wide. two-bay wide houses inherited 1 side wing, while one-bay wide houses discarded wings completely. stairs became less steep. new second floor typically contained bedrooms, along front , terrace (shaitai, 晒台). ground floor equipped kitchens (zaopi jian 灶批间). @ of house, wing added, tingzi jian (亭子间) or pergola room , located above kitchen , below terrace. typically small, low ceilings, , faced north, making least attractive room in house. used storage, or living quarters servants.
numerous new type shikumen have survived. known examples include jianye li (now revamped upmarket hotel, commercial , residential complex), siming cun, , mingde li located on avenue joffre.
