identifying bottlenecks

cycle of identifying, managing , preventing bottlenecks in production

almost every system has bottleneck, if minor one, if every system running @ full capacity, @ least 1 machine accumulating processes. identifying bottlenecks critical improving efficiency in production line because allows determine area accumulation occurs. machine or process accumulates longest queue bottleneck, isn t case. bottlenecks can found through: identifying areas accumulation occurs, evaluating throughput, assessing whether each machine being used @ full capacity , finding machine high wait time.

accumulation

when input comes in faster speed of process, accumulation starts occur. means machine either not have enough capacity, not being utilized (inefficient in use) or has under-qualified operator. method not effective @ identifying bottlenecks queues @ several process steps, there multiple processes accumulation.

throughput

since production line directly linked output of machines, allows identifying of main bottleneck in manufacturing process. in changing each machines throughput, possible assess machine affects overall output most, , hence determine bottleneck in chain of processes.

full capacity

by using utilization percentage of each production unit, possible determine machine uses highest percentage of capacity. machine bottlenecking other machines forcing them operate @ lower capacity. however, if machines in chain of processes running @ similar capacity level, increasing capacity of lowest machine not create significant improvement total output.

wait times

in case several production units running @ full capacity, tracking down time of machines allow identify machine being bottlenecked. machine prior machine highest wait or down time in chain of processes bottleneck. result of machine being under utilized.

fishbone diagram - finding bottlenecks

fishbone diagram

a fishbone diagram graphical means finding possible problems in chain of processes. collecting different data related problem, , inputting them diagram, becomes easier analyze data in order used , hence determine root of problem. commonly used find bottleneck in chain of processes due being able pinpoint machine precisely responsible delay in production.
