according brian provinciano s reverse engineering of gameking, gameking games heavily rely on bitmap rather tile-based rendering of screen, e.g. levels in platform , shoot em games in reality large 4-colour bitmaps, instead of using common method of graphic tiles , tile maps, in other game consoles , arcade games. done economic reasons (the cpu alone can handle graphics easily, @ resolution) , easy development of games, apart objectively low resolution of screen. while such scheme seems work, has disadvantage of using cartridge space inefficiently, e.g. platform games limited 3 levels. @ point, unknown if gameking uses form of sprite rendering, although unlikely , unnecessary.
