the jamiatul ulama transvaal has been criticised largely apolitical stance during apartheid era. organization, unlike counterpart in kwazulu-natal, jamiatul ulama kwazulu-natal accused more activist ulema @ truth , reconciliation commission of not speaking out against tricameral system, denied black south africans political power, while giving limited rights coloureds , indians.

the organization owns , manages community radio station called radio islam broadcasts on witwatersrand. complaint made progressive muslim organization independent broadcasting authority in 1998 radio station not allowing women heard on air. station argued islam not allow women s voices heard. authority ruled against station, , in response, station collected petition of 28 000 names women, claimed, supported decision bar women airwaves. station has since changed policy , has substantial participation women.


muhammad cartoons controversy

the organization again made headlines in 2006 when obtained interdict against several south african newspaper companies in johannesburg high court against republishing of cartoons depicting islamic prophet, muhammad. see: jyllands-posten muhammad cartoons controversy. case raised important questions limits of freedom of expression in south africa.
