2009 sensor loss QuikSCAT

in mid-2009, gradual deterioration in bearings of antenna s rotation mechanism noticed. friction caused deterioration slowed rotation rate of antenna, leading gaps in data recorded quikscat. antenna failed on november 23, 2009. upon failing, announced satellite @ end of mission , no longer used. sensor on satellite confirmed have failed around 0700 utc. loss affected real-time scanning equipment; long-term data collection remained intact , operational. according nasa, failure resulted age of satellite. mechanism seized designed last 5 years; however, remained operational ten years, twice expected use. on november 24, nasa managers began assess how extensively affected satellite , if possible restart spinning antenna. contigency plans in event of quikscat s failure reviewed.


a replacement spacecraft, iss-rapidscat, launched in 2014.
