Departure from the Don Stepan Razin






in 1667, razin gathered small group of cossacks , left don expedition in caspian sea. aimed set base in yaitsk (now known oral, located in kazakhstan on ural river) , plunder villages there. however, moscow learned of razin s plans , attempted stop him. razin traveled down volga river tsaritsyn, voivodes of astrakhan warned andrei unkovsky (the voivode or governor of tsaritsyn) of razin s arrival , recommended not allow cossacks enter town.


unkovsky attempted negotiate razin, razin threatened set fire tsaritsyn if unkovsky interfered. when encountered group of political prisoners being transported tsar s representatives on way don volga, razin reportedly said, shall not force join me, whoever chooses come me free cossack. have come fight boyars , wealthy lords. poor , plain folk, shall treat them brothers.


when razin sailed tsartisyn, unkovsky did not attack (possibly either because felt razin posed threat or because guards of tsaritsyn sympathized razin s cossacks). incident gave razin reputation of invincible warrior endowed supernatural powers. continued travels down volga , caspian sea, defeating several detachments of streltsy, or armed guardsmen. in july 1667, razin captured yaitsk disguising himself , of companions pilgrims pray @ cathedral. once inside yaitsk, opened gates rest of troops enter , occupy city. opposition sent fight razin felt reluctant because sympathized cossacks.


in spring of 1668, razin led majority of men down yaik river (also known ural river) while small portion stayed behind guard yaitsk. however, government defeated razin s men in yaitsk , razin lost base there.
