the first season set in republic city, capital of united republic of nations, multicultural sovereign state emerged civil conflict in fire nation colonies in earth kingdom after end of last airbender founded both avatar aang , recent new fire lord zuko. residents of metropolis, described if manhattan had happened in asia series creators, united passion pro-bending , spectator sport in 2 teams composed of earthbender, waterbender, , firebender throw each other out of ring using bending techniques. second season set in southern polar region, while third , fourth seasons take place in earth kingdom and, lesser degree, in republic city.


synopsis

the first season, book one: air, sees korra move republic city learn airbending tenzin, avatar aang s son. enters pro-bending league, , befriends brothers bolin , mako, asami sato, heiress future industries, leading engineering corporation. ambitious politician tarrlok enlists korra fight anti-bender uprising of equalists , led masked amon, strips benders of abilities. korra , friends, aided police chief lin beifong , united forces general iroh, unmask amon bloodbender , tarrlok s brother, ending equalists coup. spiritual meeting predecessor aang allows korra realize powers , restore bending abilities of amon s victims.


the second season, book two: spirits, begins 6 months later, dark spirits terrorizing seas. korra turns spirit-attuned uncle unalaq, chief of northern water tribe, tutelage, , opens polar portals spirit world @ direction. unalaq seizes power in southern water tribe force, starting civil war in opposed brother, korra s father, tonraq. seeking allies against unalaq, korra experiences life of first avatar, wan, fused soul spirit raava imprison opponent vaatu. aided twin children eska , desna, unalaq frees vaatu during harmonic convergence, decamillennial alignment of planets, , unites him become dark avatar. korra fights figure, link previous avatars broken; of tenzin s daughter jinora, defeats vaatu , unalaq, , leaves spirit portals open, allowing new coexistence of spirits , humans.


the third season, book three: change, begins 2 weeks later people on world discovering airbending powers result of harmonic convergence. tenzin, korra, , friends recruit them re-establish extinct air nomads, newly airbending criminal zaheer escapes prison, frees allies ghazan, ming-hua, , p li, , attempts kidnap avatar. fails of suyin beifong, lin s estranged sister. zaheer , team – members of red lotus, anarchic secret society – kill earth queen, throwing kingdom chaos, , try force korra s surrender taking air nomads hostage, including suyin s daughter opal. in final confrontation, zaheer s comrades killed , captured air nomads led jinora. 2 weeks later, weakened, wheelchair-bound korra watches jinora anointed airbending master, , tenzin rededicates air nomads service world.


the final season, book four: balance, set 3 years later. korra recovers injuries incurred in fight zaheer, traveling world alone , haunted fear. meanwhile, suyin s former head of security, kuvira, reunites fractured earth kingdom metalbenders loyal her, , refuses release power unpopular heir throne, prince wu. @ head of new, totalitarian earth empire , kuvira seizes suyin s city of zaofu , sets sights on united republic, claims nation. toph beifong s help, korra frees herself of remnants of zaheer s poison, after losing duel kuvira @ zaofu, allows zaheer overcome fears , reconnect avatar spirit, raava. when kuvira attacks republic city giant mecha carrying spirit-powered superweapon, takes efforts of korra , friends, including inventor varrick , assistant zhu li, stop colossus. after kuvira s weapon blows open third portal spirit world, destroying of city, concede defeat. series ends prospect of democracy former earth kingdom, , korra , asami leaving vacation in spirit world.
