after war, moved family rutherford county, tennessee continued teach , preach. lowery , father founded black university, tennessee manual labor university in 1867 in ebenezer, tennessee near murfreesboro based on model of franklin college. began studying law. school began struggle in 1872, reasons given including financial improprieties , ku klux klan. accusations of financial improprieties based on 1872 fundraising tour of north lowery , teacher, daneil wadkins. pair, black , republican, not supported white, largely democratic, disciples criticized school , reportedly felt success in black school undermine white superiority. lowery , wadkins accused of mismanaging funds , expelled church. without support, further fundraising efforts failed , school closed in 1874. lowery moved nashville, admitted bar , began practicing law. in 1875, moved huntsville, alabama. lowery sponsored supreme court bar belva ann lockwood, first woman admitted bar, february 2, 1880. in this, lowery first fifth african american , first african american south admitted supreme court bar , first practice before supreme court.
