the duke of beaufort, owned land, responsible through steward osmond wyatt installing path known 365 steps (though modern number of steps closer 300) road top of cliff. there, wyatt constructed split-level viewing platform called eagle s nest, in 1828. small building, moss cottage, refreshments , informal entertainment provided, built beside path, table made slab of walnut tree inside chepstow castle. cottage later fell disrepair , demolished in 1950s. in 1834, there proposal build observatory on site, never constructed.
the view eagle s nest includes farmland on opposite bank of wye @ lancaut; cliff face @ wintour s leap; chepstow castle , adjoining town; mouth of wye @ beachley; severn estuary, severn bridge , second severn crossing; , cotswold hills beyond. prince puckler-muskau, visited eagle s nest in 1828, said: grouping of landscape perfect ... know of no picture more beautiful. samuel taylor coleridge described view whole world imaged in vast circumference . writer c. j o. evans, in 1950s, wrote: in whichever direction gaze travels, sublime prospect unfolded , claim 9 counties visible on clear day not more enthralling grandeur of face of nature in rich variety of scenes beautifully displayed.
