structure
front matter

front matter, or preliminaries ( prelims , short), first section of book, , smallest section in terms of number of pages. pages numbered in lower-case roman numerals. each page counted, no folio or page number expressed, or printed, on either display pages or blank pages. front matter appears in first volume in multi-volume work, although elements (such table of contents or index) may appear in each volume.

body matter

volumes

a volume set of leaves bound together. each work either volume, or divided volumes.


books , parts

(single-volume works account of non-academic consumer market in books.) single volume may embody either part of book or whole of book; in works, parts include multiple books, , in others books include multiple parts.


chapters , sections

a chapter or section may contained within part or book. when both chapters , sections used in same work, sections more contained within chapters reverse.


modules , units

in books chapters grouped bigger parts, called modules. numbering of chapters can begin again @ start of every module. in educational books, especially, chapters called units.


the first page of actual text of book opening page, incorporates special design features, such initials.

the following 2 instructive examples:



the lord of rings has 3 parts (either in 1 volume each, or in single volume), each part containing 2 books, each containing, in turn, multiple chapters.
the christian bible (usually bound single volume) divided 2 testaments (which might more typically described parts , , differ in length factor of 3 or four), each containing dozens of books, each in turn containing multiple chapters, divided (for purposes of citation) verses each containing 1 independent clause.

back matter (end matter)

the matter, known end matter, if used, consists of 1 or more of following components:
