landy field became project of geelong guild athletic club in late 1950s. @ conclusion of 1956 melbourne olympic games, geelong city council held dinner on 15 january 1957 honour 6 geelong guild athletes (ron blackney, john chittick, robert james bob joyce, john landy, don macmillan , john vernon) had represented geelong , australia @ these games. during dinner, of neighbouring cities , shires represented, john landy made speech on behalf of honoured athletes, in landy compared overseas facilities available athletes of australia. geelong, @ stage had no dedicated athletic field of kind.
to confirm proper management structure of landy field (riverside reserve) geelong city council entered agreement geelong guild athletic club trustees (bervin e. purnell: president, rudi hochreiter snr: secretary, wal whiteside: construction engineer , charles harding: committee member). agreement confirmed on 6 january 1961 , allowed construction of landy field commence.
on 16 december 2016, geelong advertiser announced australian olympic athlete morgan mitchell, among others, run @ venue event had prize money of aud $10, 000.
