the air support division (asd) established lapd helicopter unit in 1956 1 hiller uh-12c three-seat helicopter. added second helicopter in 1963 , third in 1965. city operated bell 47g , 47j model helicopters. in 1968, unit received first bell 206a jetranger. major expansion in 1974, helicopter unit renamed air support division. @ time, asd grew 15 helicopters , 1 cessna 210 manned 77 sworn personnel. in 1976, asd added special flight section (sfs), unit dedicated supporting undercover police operations. in support role, sfs significant contributor narcotics , serialized criminal investigations. in 1988, asd added first aerospatiale as350 b1. city replaced 4 of bell 206 jetrangers , retired older piston models.
