after declining participate in first world cup (1930, in uruguay) italian national team won 2 consecutive editions of tournament in 1934 , 1938, under direction of coach vittorio pozzo , performance of giuseppe meazza, considered 1 of best italian football players of time some. other stars of era included luis monti, giovanni ferrari, giuseppe ruffino , virginio rosetta. hosts, azzurri, defeated czechoslovakia 2–1 in time in rome, goals raimundo orsi , angelo schiavio achieve first world cup title in 1934. achieved second title in 4–2 defeat of hungary, 2 goals gino colaussi , 2 goals silvio piola in world cup followed.
