rail terminal

hempstead station built central railroad of long island depot sometime between october , december 1872, on corner of main street , fulton avenue. when long island rail road acquired crrli in 1878, hempstead station , terminus came it, replacing former 1839-built hempstead station, ran along original hempstead branch.


the station remodeled in july 1881, , razed in 1913. second brick station built in february 1913, designed have trains terminate behind building rather alongside of it. due accident january 1912 involving milk train rear-ended stationary passenger car, sending across fulton avenue , crashing building across street , resulting in 2 deaths. between december 30, 1941 , 1943, service suspended when tracks cut , station moved columbia street. temporary station installed 1,265 feet west of former location until work on project finished. upon completion of move , track work, second station opened again. gutted in fire on december 31, 1962 , remodeled in april 1963. station razed in 1998 , replaced more elaborate third depot built between 1999 , 2002.


bus terminal

in 1993, construction on hempstead transit center completed , opened public. in conjunction new railroad station, construction part of plan mayor james a. garner redevelop hempstead , bring prominence long island s hub . original hempstead bus terminal located across jackson street on corner of jackson , main streets. area occupied greyhound bus stop , various businesses. new transit center can accommodate many more buses original terminal , allows half of nassau inter-county express (formerly mta long island bus) system s routes run through hempstead. although hempstead has never reached former level of prominence, new terminal , railroad station, along establishment of many new businesses, have helped reestablish hempstead hub of long island.


naming

on february 14, 2006, nassau county executive, thomas suozzi announced hempstead transit center renamed in honor of civil rights pioneer rosa parks. @ dedication, suozzi said, honor memory , of important work, today renaming vital transit hub 1 of important figures in american history.” in addition renaming of terminal, permanent exhibit of civil rights movement constructed, telling story of struggle equality through photographs of photojournalists , artists covered unrest of era, including late moneta sleet, jr., jim peppler (a photographer newsday), , herbert randall. far, column in of bus terminal has been renovated black marble, engraved large image of rosa parks , story below.
