while still junior, chan 2003 entered first pro tour event in taiwan. reached semifinals in singles , quarterfinals in doubles. started professional career in 2004. end of year, singles title holder of 3 10,000 usd itf events, including colombo, jakarta 3, , taipei. won 3 doubles titles @ jakarta 3, haibara, , mount gambier. 2005 season got off strong start win in 25,000 usd itf event in taipei. won 50,000 usd itf event in fukuoka. later year, qualified open, failed defeat serena williams in first round. after open, played 2 qualifying events in beijing , seoul, failed enter main draw. however, teamed chuang chia-jung win first tour-level doubles title in seoul.

2006

chan played in qualifying events of 4 grand slams , qualified main draws in wimbledon , open, failed beat resurgent australian alicia molik , belgian kirsten flipkens, respectively. breakthrough , first tour-level win came @ tokyo open, reached semifinal stage defeating local favourite , two-time winner ai sugiyama. victory marked first top 30 win. participated in doubles event , reached finals, once again partnering chuang chia-jung.

on challenger circuit, won singles titles in melbourne, fukuoka, kurume, , kaohsiung. regular partner chuang, won doubles titles in sydney, gosford, fukuoka, kurume, , kaohsiung. after victory in kaohsiung, surged top 100 , ranked no. 73 in singles.

2007

to establish herself @ wta tour level, chan participated in events @ beginning of 2007. entered main draws of australian open, pattaya, bangalore, , indian wells, failed advance past first round. in miami, reached second round defeating nuria llagostera vives, before losing first seed maria sharapova.

chan found footing after entering clay court season. in charleston, qualified main draw,and stunned no. 39 ranked séverine brémond in 2 sets set rematch against reigning australian open , miami winner serena williams. chan 5–3 before serena retired groin injury. magical journey in charleston ended in third round, defeated venus williams in straight sets.

to improve singles game, chan entered 3 itf pro events after charleston , won 3 of them. success in 3 events, ranking rose career high no. 50 on june 11. in bangkok, chan reached first wta singles final, lost no. 49 ranked flavia pennetta in 2 sets.

her singles achievements aside, chan had success in doubles in 2007. awarded wild-card entry, chan , chuang reached finals of australian open, chan s first grand slam doubles event. on way final, defeated 2006 open doubles finalists dinara safina , katarina srebotnik , 2006 australian open , wimbledon champions yan zi , zheng jie. in february, chans participated in 2 more events. reached final @ both pattaya , bangalore, , won doubles title in latter.

2008

at qatar telecom german open in berlin, chan became last player whom top-ranked justine henin ever defeated before retired following week. chan represented country @ beijing olympics, in both singles , doubles.

2009

chan started season unexpected lead of 5–1 against russian world no. 4 elena dementieva in first round match in auckland, new zealand. chan lost match eventual champion. after that, results uninspiring other winning round @ australian open, first time so.

chan diagnosed fatigue fracture in left foot, stopped season 3 months after sony ericsson open in miami when grass season kicked off. suffered quite number of upsets after comeback, rebounded in time asian tour in autumn. delighted home crowds sweeping both singles , doubles (with chuang) titles in taipei 100k+h itf tournament. fourth year in row, chan finished season in top 100.

on doubles court, chan shocked world no. 1 team of cara black , liezel huber romanian monica niculescu, in quarterfinals of premier level tournament in stanford. defeated serena , venus williams in title match after taking out seeded pair of maria kirilenko , sorana cîrstea.

2010–2014

in 2010 open, chan beat 2 former wta top 50s – anne keothavong , tamira paszek – make first round of 32 in grand slam, previous best results round of 64 @ 2008 open, 2009 australian open, , 2010 wimbledon. in third round, lost 1–6, 0–6 top seed , world no. 2 caroline wozniacki.

in 2011 australian open, chan reached final of mixed doubles paul hanley, first grand slam final. along way, defeated defending champions, , fourth seeded, cara black , leander paes in 2 set tiebreakers. however, team lost final second seeds daniel nestor , katarina srebotnik in 3 sets.

chan reached semifinals of 2012 mercury insurance open, losing marion bartoli 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.

2014, lost title match of taipei wta challenger vitalia diatchenko 6-1, 2-6, 4-6.

2015: australian open doubles final

chan lost third grand slam doubles final @ australian open. , sister won fourth wta doubles title @ western & southern open, , doing so, have second-most wta doubles titles pair of sisters in wta history after serena , venus williams. chans previous 3 wta doubles titles came @ shenzhen in 2013, eastbourne in 2014, , pattaya city in 2015. cincinnati represents biggest title yet, first @ premier 5 level. go on win title @ japan women s open in tokyo.

2017: open doubles champion, world no. 1

in february 2017, chan teamed swiss former world no. 1 martina hingis women s doubles competition @ dubai duty free championship. hingis had split short-time american partner coco vandeweghe due limited success together. in march, chan won indian wells hingis, defeated lucie hradecka , katerina siniakova in final. first premier mandatory title chan , hence, biggest title of career. team added titles in madrid , rome final victories on tímea babos , andrea hlaváčková , ekaterina makarova , elena vesnina, respectively.

chan , hingis played first grand slam @ french open. advanced semifinals, lost eventual champions, bethanie mattek-sands , lucie Šafářová.

in september, , hingis won first grand slam women s doubles title @ open when defeated lucie hradecká , kateřina siniaková in straight sets. 7th title of season.
