collaborations marked first release stuart cooper s concert film of music festival india, issued on dvd disc 4 of box set. film shot @ royal albert hall on monday, 23 september 1974. text @ start of dvd s concert film section explains restoration needed on both footage , audio, latter being overseen producer paul hicks , shankar s daughter anoushka shankar. of cooper s 35-year-old footage having been destroyed or mislaid, remainder of concert s sound included in separate, concert audio section. in review goldmine, gaar writes that, music festival s studio album, concert dvd features both traditional indian music , powerful performances on collaborations.


film synopsis

the film opens image of large red om symbol on yellow sheet, provides backdrop albert hall stage. george harrison walks on , gives brief, warm introduction ravi shankar, after music festival india performance begins.


the stage set 2 large risers; first in shape of square, second, more raised first one, curved around behind half-moon. on square riser, left right, sit singers viji shankar, lakshmi shankar , kamala chakravarty, percussionist harihar rao , bansuri player hariprasad chaurasia behind them. spread out along crescent-shaped platform (from left right) 3 bowed string players, l. subramaniam, satyadev pawar , sultan khan; anant lal, on shehnai; 4 drummers, t.v. gopalkrishnan, alla rakha, rijram desad , kamalesh maitra, last 2 partly surrounded tarangs (circles) of hand drums. completing ring of musicians along curved riser sitarist kartick kumar; gopal krishan, behind raised vichitra veena; , shivkumar sharma, behind large, harpsichord-like santoor. shankar conducts orchestra in front of first riser, audience.


midway through film, stage cleared of musicians except 4 members of orchestra , shankar, plays sitar on ensuing raga. after customary slow alap section, shankar s sitar trades musical phrases rakha s tabla, supported kumar , rao, both on sitar, , viji shankar, playing tambura. whole ensemble returns further vocal , orchestral pieces, conducted shankar before.


bonus feature

the dvd s bonus feature, directed david kew, shows hicks , anoushka shankar @ work on mix pieces released in concert film section. joined there @ studiowest, in san diego, shankar himself , harrison s widow, olivia, allowing 90-year-old shankar offer input. @ 1 point anoushka covers father s eyes playfully – in response, seems, reaction @ seeing himself on screen, performing 4 decades before.
