just before 2:00 pm aest 2 tornadoes tore through towns of jundah , stonehenge in western queensland, on 1,100 km west of state capital brisbane. damage significant in both townships, jundah had significant damage 80% of buildings , stonehenge without power 52 hours after tornadoes hit. impact of tornado on jundah caused communications networks go down, power lost, , single channel radio networks, microwave networks , battery backups went out. damage homes alone estimated @ least a$1 million, , a$600,000 worth of damage done barcoo shire council properties. tornadoes each rate @ f1 on fujita scale, winds recorded @ 140 km/h near jundah.

a tornado impacted new south wales town of ungarie, located on 500 km west of sydney town has population of approximately 350. damage significant enough disaster relief grants made available affected storm. cost of damage public , private infrastructure in , around ungarie estimated a$3 million.

on australia day weekend, 9 tornadoes spawned across state of queensland ex-tropical cyclone oswald. first tornado struck coastal town of bargara, east of city of bundaberg, @ 1pm on january 26, injuring 17 people , damaging 150 properties. second tornado struck town of burnett heads @ 3:30 p.m., , third @ coonarr. bungadoo, town 40 kilometres (25 mi) southwest of bundaberg, struck tornado after 4 p.m, , burnett heads hit again @ 6:20 p.m. radar imagery showed possible sixth tornado 30 km west of maryborough. in hours of january 27, tornado struck burrum heads 45 kilometres (28 mi) south of bundaberg, whilst radar imagery showed possible tornado activity on bribie island. ninth tornado reported @ mooloolaba, swept through housing estate, uprooting trees , causing minor damage. result of tornadoes, entirety of southeast queensland, including brisbane, sunshine coast , gold coast, placed under tornado watch january 27.

as intense upper-level trough moved across interior united states, extremely warm air mass spread eastward ahead of storm, resulting in slight atmospheric instability in tennessee , ohio river valleys. warm air mass followed strong cold front, causing temperatures fall below freezing. increased instability in region, quasi-linear convective system (qlcs) formed , moved across area ahead of cold front, producing numerous tornadoes , wind-related damage. on two-day period january 29 january 30, 962 tornado, hail, , strong wind reports received storm prediction center (spc). of these, 83 were tornado-related reports. strongest of these tornadoes occurred on january 30 , affected areas of bartow , gordon counties in georgia. high-end ef3 killed 1 person in adairsville, ending record 220‑day streak without tornado-related fatality in united states, last death occurring due ef2 tornado associated tropical storm debby in florida in june 2012. 65 confirmed tornadoes third ever recorded occur in january. outbreak largest january-tornado outbreak in middle tennessee, confirmed 22 tornadoes.
