the series2 complete redesign of tivo hardware. includes usb ports (for ethernet , wi-fi adapters), new cpu, , more ram. availability of network connectivity has spread software side, new features tivotogo , home media engine applications supported.

series2 tivo systems based on mips processors connected mpeg-2 encoder/decoder chips , high-capacity ide/ata hard drives. current series2 units have drives of 40–250gb in size. although not supported tivo or equipment manufacturers, larger drives can added.

series2 standalone

all standalone tivo systems have coax/rf-in , internal cable-ready tuner, analog video input—composite/rca, , s-video—for use external cable box or satellite receiver. tivo unit can use serial cable or ir blasters control external receiver. have coax/rf, composite/rca, , s-video output, , dvd systems have component out. audio rca stereo, , dvd systems have digital optical out. series2 systems have usb ports, used support network (wired ethernet , wifi) adapters. series2 units, models starting 110/130/140, have usb 1.1 hardware, while other systems have usb 2.0.

some models manufactured toshiba, pioneer, , humax, under license tivo, contain dvd-r/rw drives. models can transfer recordings built-in hard drive dvd video-compliant discs, playable in modern dvd systems. video encoding on these models modified match dvd standard transferring dvd not require transcoding.

the series2 standalones can tune analog signals, comply fcc rules on analog tv phaseout, models record over-the-air channels no longer sold. dual tuner (dt) models , tcd542 (a revision of tcd540) record cable , satellite sources.

series2 directv

some tivo systems integrated directv receivers. these directivo recorders record incoming satellite mpeg-2 digital stream directly hard disk without conversion. because of , fact have 2 tuners, directivos able record 2 programs @ once. in addition, lack of digital conversion allows recorded video of same quality live video. directivos have no mpeg encoder chip, , can record directv streams. however, directv has disabled networking capabilities on systems, meaning directivo not offer such features multi-room viewing or tivotogo. standalone systems can networked without additional unsupported hacking.

the hr10-250 directivo units can record hdtv 250gb hard drive, both directv stream , over-the-air via standard uhf- or vhf-capable antenna. have 4 tuners (two directv , 2 atsc over-the-air) and, original directivo, can record 2 programs @ once; further, program guide integrated between over-the-air , directv programs can recorded , viewed in same manner. recording capacity variable, 30 hd or 200 sd hours.

on july 8, 2006, directv announced upgrade version 6.3 of tivo software hr10-250, first major upgrade since unit released. upgrade includes features such program grouping (folders), faster on-screen guide, , new sorting features.
