Physical design Arithmometer

1 physical design

1.1 input – control – execution
1.2 output – accumulator
1.3 arithmometer s leibniz wheel

physical design

the arithmometer brass instrument housed in wooden box made of oak or mahogany , oldest ones ebony (solid or veneer). instrument divided 2 parts.

input – control – execution

the bottom part composed of set of sliders used input value of operands. on left of control lever allows select current operation, namely addition/multiplication or subtraction/division. crank located on right of sliders used execute operation selected control lever.

output – accumulator

the top part movable carriage composed of 2 display registers , 2 reset buttons. top display register holds result of previous operation , acts accumulator current operation. each command adds or subtracts number inscribed on sliders part of accumulator directly above it. lower display register counts number of operations performed @ each index therefore displays multiplier @ end of multiplication , quotient @ end of division.

each number in accumulator can individually set knob situated right below it. feature optional operation counter register.

the accumulator , result counter in between 2 buttons used reset content @ once. left button resets accumulator, right button resets operation counter. these buttons used handles when lifting , sliding carriage.

arithmometer s leibniz wheel

in position shown, counting wheel meshes 3 of 9 leibniz wheel s teeth , therefore 3 added attached counter each , every full rotation.

the animation on side shows nine-toothed leibniz wheel coupled red counting wheel. counting wheel positioned mesh 3 teeth @ each rotation , therefore add or subtract 3 counter @ each rotation.

the computing engine of arithmometer has set of linked leibniz wheels coupled crank handle. each turn of crank handle rotates leibniz wheels 1 full turn. input sliders move counting wheels , down leibniz wheels, linked carry mechanism.

in arithmometer leibniz wheels turn same way. difference in between addition , subtraction achieved reverser operated execution lever , located in movable display carriage.
