modern history
between 1358 , 1360 rudolf iv, duke of austria, built wooden bridge across lake has been used 1878 – measuring approximately 1,450 metres (4,757 ft) in length , 4 metres (13 ft) wide; 546 oak piles have been installed. in 1415, town bought freedom itself. in 1442, during old zurich war, rapperswil in alliance zürich , habsburg dynasty. in 1458 rapperswil controlled swiss confederation so-called gemeine herrschaft, i.e. under control of 2 cantons (glarus , schwyz) of old swiss conferation , representant, vogt @ rapperswil castle.
