from march april 2012, team of scientists , technicians both at-sea , on shore conducted exploratory investigations on diversity , distribution of deep-sea habitats , marine life in northern gulf of mexico. 56-day expedition divided 3 legs. through discussions , information stemming may 2011 atlantic basin workshop, fall 2011 gulf of mexico mapping expedition, , leg of 2012 gulf of mexico expedition, noaa , broader science community identified number of exciting targets explore during legs ii , iii. explored cold seeps, deep coral communities, undersea canyons, , shipwrecks.the expedition marked return of institute exploration’s little hercules remotely operated vehicle (rov) , noaa s seirios camera sled , lighting platform noaa ship okeanos explorer. when these systems deployed ship, able provide scientists , audiences onshore real-time video footage deepwater areas in important, yet largely unknown, u.s. waters.
